Someone made a Polymarket wallet on 20 October. Its first trade was $9,000 on "Republicans win the Texas Senate race" at 43 cents. Ten more buys followed. Same market, same side, every time. The last one landed the night before the vote.
Total: $402,978 for 1.26 million shares at a 32 cent average.
If Ken Paxton wins tonight, those shares pay $1 each. The wallet makes $854,667. If James Talarico wins, it makes nothing. There is no hedge. It never touched the Democrat side.
Why this is strange
Nobody warms up with $400,000. Most wallets on Polymarket start small, lose a bit, learn the interface. This one opened with a five-figure bet and never bought anything else.
It also bought into weakness. The market drifted from 45 cents to 26 cents over the two weeks. The wallet kept buying on the way down, the biggest clip after the worst poll.
Three readings:
- Someone with a conviction and a lot of money. Texas has not elected a Democrat statewide since 1994. At 26 cents the market is pricing a Talarico win as more likely than not. A believer in the base rate sees free money.
- Someone who knows something. Internal polling, turnout data, a county model. Polymarket is where that gets monetised now.
- Someone laundering a hedge. A Talarico donor, or a fund long Texas-sensitive assets, buying the other side.
The trade record cannot tell these apart. The result tonight will not either, because the reading does not depend on who wins. It depends on who was buying.
The scan
I pulled every trade on the market from the Polymarket data API, grouped by wallet, and kept wallets whose first trade on the whole platform was less than a month ago. This one topped the list by dollars. Two others are parking six figures on Democrats winning the House at 93 to 95 cents, which is a different story: that is a yield trade, not a bet.
The scan reruns tomorrow with the results in.
